The New York-based MATA festival For Composers commissioned Jobina Tinnemans for their 2013 edition.
Killing Time, for field instruments and ensemble, was premiered with Vicky Chow (piano), Alex Waterman (cello), Alicia Lee (clarinet) and Yang Yi (guzheng) at Roulette, Brooklyn.
The field instruments are performed with prepared knitting needles. In the MATA performance the knitters were Nataline Viray-Fung, Lysa Chen, Isabelle Holmes, Janusz Jaworski and Julie Vasady-Kovacs, flanked by a large ensemble of knitters using regular needles to create a soundscape made up of delicate layers of percussive tapping.
The work caught the attention of Vogue Knitting, who staged the concert on their catwalk in 2016; watch the Youtube here.
