Commissioned as a tribute piece to commemorate Edgar Varèse’s ‘Poème Électronique’, a multi media show which was realised 60 years ago in the Philips Pavilion for the Paris World Exhibition in 1958. Iannis Xenakis designed a truly stunning piece of architecture as Gesamtkunst to the show.

Similar to the original this composition is a sound poem, but instead located outdoors, in its ‘hinterland’, framing Varèse’s monument in a soundscape of surreal ingredients.

In this work, the virtual instruments are integrated as part of the orchestra.

The ‘bird’ colony vocalisations are by the Icelandic Kammerkór Sudurlands, recorded on-location on the Snaefelsness peninsula. In between kittiwake gulls and volcanic rocks choir members were asked to vocalise in our most ‘native tongue’, a language preceding any other language: our universally shared language of wordless calls. These recordings are transformed into designer virtual instruments which use specially developed hardware interfaces to perform.

Varèsotto, Hinterland of Varèse, is one of the seven selected works for the Matthijs Vermeulen Prijs 2019.

Matthijs Vermeulen Prijs 2019

Fonds Podiumkunsten has selected 7 of my works for the #MatthijsVermeulenprijs 2019 which premiered in New York, Iceland, Lithuania, UK and The Netherlands. It will be a hard sell to some (re Dutch musicologist article I posted earlier), but let’s focus on turning the page!

Electric Poetry ‘Varesotto [Hinterland of Varese]’

Eindhoven friends, ‘Electric Poetry’ celebrates 60 years of electronica in art since Poème Électronique in the Philips Pavillion in Paris in 1958. The exhibition opens on December 15. Première on Sunday!

Sheer coincidence it marks my tenth anniversary of moving to the UK on December 15, 2007. For personal reasons I’ve never done anything in the Lowlands in this time, but very recently all has come to a conclusion and I’m very honoured to be marking it by this piece ‘Varesotto [Hinterland of Varese]’. Thank you Rene Pare.
